matthew may be a therapist here at stanfield, but he wasn't always a therapist. yes, he used to be an inmate like all the rest of them here that he takes care of today. he used to be an addict. drinking was unfortunately his weakness. he came to stanfield several years ago when he was fourteen and didn't leave until he was seventeen. fortunately, after that, he went to college to become a therapist - for four years. he applied for a job here and got it right away! it took him three years to get better and get rid of alcohol in general. he refuses to ever touch it again. a substitute for that, sometimes, is cigarettes. its casual for him, but only when he's stressed and that apparently relieves it.
matthew decided to become a therapist because of what he went through when he came to stanfield. no therapist gave a shit about him. that's why he was here for so long. so he wanted to be a better person than his therapists were and become one. he wanted to help the inmates here and heal them faster so they can get out of here and live their life. something he wasn't really able to do since he was in here for most of his teenage years. he regrets even running into alcohol. he even regrets giving into stupid peer pressure. it's the weakness of people these days. wrong friends = bad life.
