Boot clad feet walked slowly but purposefuly into the flower gardens. A small breeze had blown happily about the asylum grounds all day but it was still as a grave in the garden. Ruffled skirt tickled her pale knees as she stopped just inside the entrance, slim fingers drifting themselves over a pink rose. Bending at the waist, she stared intently at the inside of the flower, how the white seeped into the pink canvas like blood on a bedsheet. Rough nails caught on the edge of the petals as she traced the contours, mouth quirked at one side. Catching sight of her hands she stopped and scrutinized them. The nails were rough and jagged from her biting them excessively, hands were paper white from no sun, fingers slim and long claws. She wasn't proud of these hands. Not at all.
Straightening back up she smoothed the front of her dark purple shirt before turning to walk further into the garden. Colors blossomed here with ferocity and it almost blinded her sometimes when she came across bright yellow daffodiles or striking purple irises. Soft petals, small and pale pink, were cupped by here hand only minutes later when she found what she had been looking for. Cherry blossoms, so miniature and delicate. They reminded her of home and it made her peaceful inside for once. The black hobo bag that had been resting around her neck was finally being used as she reached into it to pull out a small sketchbook and pencil.
She was still learning the aspects of good drawing but she wasn't horrible. Her grandmother had taught her something good before she had screwed everything up. Raven eyebrows dipped low, eyes flinty as she remembered the beating but she shook her head fiercely before refocusing on the small flower. It was only a short while later that she was sitting crisscrossed on the ground, humming quietly to herself while shading the flower petals. She just wished she had actual colors to make the picture come alive. Sometimes when you're so engrossed in the most simple task you don't realized your being watched.

need to get in touch with the softer side of himself...pft! ethan said inside his head. he walked into the garden and inhaled it's flowery scent. despite being winter, there was still some plants that managed to grow beneath the light dusting of snow. he kicked some dirt with the toe of his shoe as he continued to walk down the beaten path. his hands were balled into fists inside of his northface jacket and his teeth were clenched, making his jawline more prominent. god, every time he talked to a therapist, he always walked away more angry then when he came in.
he knew it wasn't the therapist's fault. she was doing her job, and hell, maybe she even did care, but deep down ethan knew that he was the real problem. he was a smart ass, had a negative attitude and wouldn't open up. most sessions they sat in silence to sharp it could cut like a knife. sometimes she'd ask him questions about his day, or his favorite things, and he's usually give her one word answers. he knew it frustrated her, which is why he chose to do it. he liked seeing her thin eyebrows furrow, her pink glossy lips pucker.
the garden was the last place he'd be in. it reminded him a lot of his mother's garden back home. he missed his mom, his sisters, he missed being home, but he did not miss that house. after the incident, the family moved in with their aunt while he rotted in jail waiting for a sentence. last he heard, the house had been subject to a tear down. thinking about the incident made his heart ache and instinctively he placed a hand over his heart, as if trying to soothe it; make it heal; piece it together again. of course it was no use; he'd forever be a broken man.

The wind was finally picking up and it was making a horrible shiver start. Letting the sketchbook fall from her small hands, she tapped the pencil against her temple. She really didn't want to go back to the dorm and face all those other girls and but she didn't want to be out in the weather either. Shoving her book and pencil back into the hobo bag, she rubbed her face wearily for a few seconds before pushing herself upward. Adjusting her shirt, she pushed pulled her hood up and shoved her hands into the pockets. Tossing her hair out of her face she heard the crunching of another set fo shoes in the thin snow but she wasn't going to hide. Especially if it was her therapist. She was pretty sure she missed her first appointment.
She was in the innocent process of knocking the snow off her boot when she saw him walk around the corner. She almost laughed when she saw his expression, so fierce and dramatic. Tilting her head sideways for a second or two, she stepped into his path. Her face didn't have some smartass smirk on it and she didn't even have a smart comment on her tongue. "Looks like somebody's already royally ticked you off." Her voice was neutral as she pushed back her hood, the wind blowing her black hair forward to frame her pale face. She wasn't in for the fun of provoking someone who evidently had the anger issues like herself but she wasn't going to walk around the asylum and not know who the hell some of the people were. Tapping one of her boots on the hard ground, she dipped her head a little before speaking again. "Name's Jude, who're you?" She jerked her hand forward. Sometimes being polite isn't horrible.

ethan's face was always transformed into a permanent frown or a scowl, at least it was after the incident. he remembered the times when he used to smile, used to laugh, used to feel happy. now, he couldn't even remember when he last genuinely smiled, or laughed so card he cried, or felt like he was floating on a cloud because he was so happy. most days he felt depressed, alone, but mostly angry - at himself and at her. mostly her. he blamed it all on her. she was so selfish, too stubborn to get help. god, if she had only...he shook his head, erasing the thought. there was no point in thinking about it now. she was gone.
a small girl positioned herself in his path. she was little, with pale skin and dark hair. she kind of had that...emo look to her. before he came here, he had no idea what an emo looked like. or maybe she was scene? he heard that term around here as well. he always thought there was just people, but the asylum really categorized people. there were groups, and he was the co leader of his. anyway, he didn't know what to make of her sudden appearance. ethan was a friendly guy sometimes. he was popular back in high school and he felt well liked here, but maybe that was because he was feared. "uh...yeah..." he responded stupidly.
"i'm ethan." he said and firmly shook her hand.

So either he was violent or slow as mess cause he just about walked on top of her. The hand that wasn't being stick out into the no-man's land between positioned itself on her hip. He sure wasn't bright and cheery. Rolling her eyes at the thought she looked him over, sure that he was doing the same to her. Sure, she looked like the typical stereotype with her pale skin and dark hair but whatever, she made her own decisions outside of the group. Clearing her throat as he started talk she quirked her mouth to one side. "Cat got your tongue?" She bared her teeth playfully as he started forward to shake her hand.
Firmly shaking it once she leaned back on the balls of her feet and looked him over again, this time a little more thoroughly. He had that rugged look to him, like a hard worker and he wasn't afraid of dirt. She had been like that once but the people at the asylum didn't think blunt objects were good for the soul since they could be used as weapons. Looking around she spotted a small stone bench. Gesturing at him she crossed to it silently, plopping down and resting her chin into her cupped hands, elbows resting on her knees. "So, Ethan, how's the lovely place treating you. I'm not gonna say pot callin' kettle black but I'll take a tiny guess and say we're in the same group?" Her accent was thick and country as she raised her eyebrows at him.

slow? not a chance. violent? only when provoked. anyway, he didn't mean to almost crash into her. he was just thinking about the past and how much he fucked up and how much he wished he could go back. he thought about those three things a lot and when he did, he usually went off in his own world. besides, she was little enough to almost not see. she was tiny and delicate, while he was tall and muscular. he always had a thing for petite girls...but he was getting ahead of himself here. he noticed she looked him up and down, so he figured that was permission to do the same - so he did. she was pretty, dressed nice, and well...that is all he could make of her so far.
when she gestured to the stone bench, he sighed a little. this is what he got for going out - a conversation. it wasn't that he didn't want to talk, it was just that he wasn't much of a talker. of course, she'd find that out soon enough and she'd grow tired of wrestling words out of him and then she'd leave, like most girls did. she walked off and he stood there for a moment, watching her go, before he followed suit. ethan plopped down on the bench and slouched a little, hands still in his pockets. he stared straight, avoiding her gaze purposefully.
she spoke a little more this time and her accent rang clear and true. she was a southerner, like him! he smiled a little bit, but caught himself, so it looked more like a grimace. she rambled about being in the same group and he shrugged. "i don't give out personal information." he replied simply.

Crossing her legs, she looked up at the clear sky. It was so bright right now though more snow was bound to come in and make it all dark and grey everywhere. Peripheral vision allowed her to watch him carefuly. He wasn't exactly thrilled at the thought of being her evidently and it made her skin crawl. The tingling feeling of goosebumps made her tingle on the inside too. Fingers curved into her shirt's pocket, almost like talons, as she watched him take a few steps forward before dumping himself as far away as possible on the bench. It was like he was going to make her physically ill that he was so close now. Picking herself up quickly, she was like a flustered bird, her hair was in a wild position thanks to the wind and her eyes were flinty and calculating.
"Its not like I'm trying to figure out your innermost secrets you know. Isn't like I'm sitting in front of you handing you a box of tissues because of your horrible past. Believe me, I'd just tell you that you fucked up in the first place. Why the hell would you be so worried about personal information when the staff already has you under lock and key?" She couldn't help but state the fact, her biggest downfall and best. She didn't care if he was a mass murderer, she didn't care if he saw monsters in his sleep, he didn't have to be short with her. It wasn't like she was a fucking five year old and her mother was telling not to pick her fucking nose. All through her words and actions she had started pacing and now she was in danger of wearing the heels off her cowboy boots if she kept up the action.

it wasn't that she repulsed him or anything. she was pretty, seemed nice enough, and had to be fearless since she approached him. trying to hold a conversation with him was not something many people tried to do. he looked frightening, and he was aware of that, but yet he didn't try to appear any more friendly. ethan knew that he might be offending her with his distance, but honestly, it would be better this way. it's always better to not get to close.
of course she would take his reply the wrong way. it wasn't anything personal, he just didn't like to talk about himself. however, she flew off the handle and sprung up from the bench like a rose in the spring time. she flitted with her hair, paced back and forth and yelled at him. all the while, he just sat there, staring blankly past her. he would not let this little thing upset him or anger him in anyway. he had to be good...he had to be good...he had to be...
"oh, shut up!" he said, his voice raised and tinged with annoyance. "did you ever think that perhaps i am just a private person? you don't think i know that asylum has shit on me? that is plenty enough. i don't need you knowing my life story and making judgements as well!" frustrated, he stood up and began to walk away from her.

Now drama wasn't something she loved but the reactions that were caused during made her laugh her ass off sometimes. This wasn't exactly drama but the reaction she could see bubbling up in his handsome face was enough for her to explode with glee. Go ahead, call her a bitch, she'll just agree and then pop you in the face. She had stopped pacing right before he exploded in his own little tirade, her hands clenching into fists as he got louder. Fists slammed themselves into her hips to keep her knuckles from flying into his face. She would fight anyone but he was bigger then her and evidently had more muscle. Besides, she liked the shirt she had on. Dipping her head low as he finally finished snapping back, a smile just spread her features.
He was just a few feet away from her when the laugh bubbled over like a boiling pot. One arm wrapped around her waist and another holding her cheek, she bent over slightly, the mirth just pouring out of her. Her laugh was clear and high as she dwindled down after a little bit inot a chuckle, the smile make her cheeks dimple. The dimples would be cute if her smile wasn't mean and sarcastic. "Thats right buddy boy, walk away. Shut up? Go ahead and make me." Her joy fro his reaction had ebbed away and the quick steps she had taken placed her in front of him again, this time only inches away. He was quite a bit taller than her, dark eyes daring him. Her whisper was sarcastic. "Come on Ethan, I'm not the big bad wolf. I only nibble." Nobody ever said she couldn't have some sort of fun. At this rate no guys would even want to consider her. The thought almost made her laugh again.

quite frankly, ethan hated people. he hated how people talked, acted, walked and sometimes, looked. he was anti-social, a loner. he had to be. he got pissed off so easily. it was likely he'd kill a guy just for blinking in his direction. honestly, it was for the safety of other people that he never included himself in things; especially conversations. but no, he had to be polite and flatter this girl. he just had to be a nice, young man. well, fuck that.
she was laughing at him, and he could feel his blood start to boil. he stopped walking, his shoulders hunched over in anger and his hands balled into tight fists. god, he never thought a laugh could be so annoying. it was like nails on a damn chalkboard. he closed his eyes and tried to calm himself by doing some breathing techniques. it was working...kind of, but he really just wanted to go over there and knock her down on her skinny ass. just to teach her a lesson. she probably thought he wouldn't touch her just because she was a girl and well...she was right.
finally, he turned around and walked over to her, not stopping his confident stride till he was right in her face. he towered over her, so he had to look down. "listen, jenny, jasmine, whatever your name is..." he began in a calm voice. he let his fingertips dance across her pale arms before he wrapped his fingers around her wrists in a tight grasp. then he yanked her into him, lifting her tiny frame off the ground a bit. "back off. you are fucking around with the wrong person. got it?" he said and pushed her away from him. god, she probably had no idea how nice he was trying to be.

Most people didn't know that anger was the quickest reacting emotion in the body. Yes, emotions are just like racehorses. They breathe down your neck, put pressure on you, and even forece you sometimes to do things. Dark eyes watched the anger ripple through him like a crashing wave and it made her electrified. She loved when something went along just as planned. His halt made her stiffen and she reached up quickly to push her wild hair behind her ears, eyes narrowed at him. Rough nails scratched the inside of her palms as fingers curled themselves into fists so tight her knuckles turned a ghostly shade of white. Surely that wasn't good for circulation. He spoke and she just rolled her eyes at him, he wasn't convinced her at all. Only when he started coming towards her did she get slightly concerned. If he hit her, then whatever. She had been in plenty of fights before, some of them with guys, she could recover in no time.
Some people called her nerve stupidity. Whatever. His warm fingers slid over her arms before becoming like handcuffs on her wrists. Upper lip twitched and she slowly looked down at his grip, eyes wideing and rage began filling them. His words were hollow to her and she jerked her face back up to him as their chests touched. The silent snarl that marked her face made her features ugly and brutal. If he didn't get the message that she was now sending he was a complete idiot. His shove only made her take a step before she was leaning forward. Pulling back her arm to take a hit at him she had a thought. Her laughing wasn't joyous this time, it was slick and lethal. "Is that how you got here? Put your hands on some girl. Listen to me you donkey fucking, cock sucking, stupid ass motherfucker, you think you're badass? Maybe you did something worse, but guess what, I'm no Mary Poppins myself." Her words had ended being spat through bared teeth before she stalked past him. Next time it wouldn't end in words.

nowadays it seemed that the only emotion ethan felt was angry. all day, he felt like he was a pot of boiling water, just waiting to boil over the metal sides and scald anyone stupid enough to come within close proximity. the emotion was starting to take a toll on his body; his muscles ached from being so tense, his fingers were stiff from always being balled into fists, and his jaw throbbed from clenching so hard. and his head, was the worst of all. he had headaches, night after night. he always woke up in a cold sweat from nightmares that were usually flashbacks from the incident. he wished that the obliviate charm from the harry potter series really existed; he just wanted it all erased.
ethan knew that jude was a feisty girl. she was small, but he could tell she had a kick her, like a chili pepper. therefore, he wasn't surprised when she sassed back. he had expected it and probably would have been disappointed if she had said nothing in response. the whole thrill of the fight was the anticipation of what your enemy would do. her name calling didn't bother him a bit. he had been called worse. it's what she said after that pulled on his heart string. how did she know he was here because he laid his hands on a woman? was it that obvious? did it say: "i murdered my wife" somewhere on his forehead?
it was approaching the one year anniversary of the incident, so what he had done had been on his mind even more often lately. her venom slicked words really hit him like a cannon. as she walked away, he felt his knees grow weak. he never wanted to hurt a woman, and here he was now, threatening jude and pushing her, grabbing her wrists. like a tree being cut down, he fell hard to the ground, a blank stare on his face. right at this moment, he felt so vulnerable and he was about to say something he had never said to person before..."i'm sorry..." he croaked out in barely a whisper. it was a good thing the garden was silent.
