Germany, 1968. Hanna Fleischer had already given birth to three sons, and this was surely to be her last. She didn’t even want this one. He was unplanned, but she and her husband, Leonard, would care for him anyway. They would love him all the same, and as soon as he came out of the womb, screaming and crying, his tiny lungs filling with hospital air, they couldn’t have been happier about their little accident.
That bubble of afterbirth happiness? It was short lived. As a stay-at-home mother caring for four children, life could be extremely daunting. The Cold War was still going full steam ahead, but the Fleischer family was lucky. Not only did they live on the West side, they weren’t even in Berlin. His father was a professor and earned enough money to keep food on the table, but to afford luxuries, they had to save, which was fine by them. Of course, Hanna was starting to break under the pressure. She rarely went out and there was no female presence in the household other than herself. Her marriage was well, but there the passionate flame was flickering dimly. Leonard was always tired, and although he loved his wife, they didn’t do much but talk about their days at the dinner table. Hanna often went stir-crazy, but what could she do? Nothing. She was always busy caring for her boys or cleaning the house. After Klaus was born, Hanna was on her last thread of sanity.
The trouble started when Klaus was only five. Because Hanna and Leonard rarely made blissful love together, Hanna went elsewhere to seek pleasure. She started to sleep around, and it was kept a secret for a while, but everyone could tell something was off with Hanna. Klaus was only a small child, but he could still sense the decline of love he was feeling from his mother. It confused him greatly, but he was told not to worry.
The summer of Klaus’s eighth was when everything really went down hill. Leonard began to question Hanna and why she was so cold lately, but Hanna retaliated by telling him he was the one without passion. The argument heated up, and the last thing Hanna said before she slammed the door shut was, “I hope it hurts to be alone.”
Klaus loved his mother, but now that she was gone, what was he supposed to do? He felt lonely, and it was clear that he was taking it the hardest. He felt angry that his mother abandoned him and his brothers, but he was especially heartbroken because it hurt his father so much. Leonard began to drink and hide himself away from the world, so the four boys were on their own, basically. They went to school like normally, but there was a dark cloud clearly hanging above their heads. It was a cloud that would never go away.
Life went on, though. It had to. The boys went to school and Klaus continued to live each day with sorrow and regret. He was upset that his mother had left, and somehow he felt he could have done something to stop it. The older he got, the more he wondered if his birth began the decline of her sanity. It was difficult for Klaus to push the thought away, and it soon began to eat away at him.
Something had to be done to the Fleischer family. By the time Klaus was thirteen, things weren’t going well. His oldest brother didn’t go to university so that he could take care of their alcoholic father, and he didn’t want Klaus or the others to be around him. So, what happened next? The oldest children, Adrian and Walther, stayed in Germany. Roland and Klaus were given arrangements to live with their aunt and uncle in America. Everything was set up, and the summer before Klaus entered high school, he was on a plan to North America. Manhattan, to be exact.
Roland and Klaus lived out the rest of their youths in New York with their aunt and uncle. Klaus finished up high school and attended university to become a doctor. After years of training and schooling, Klaus landed his first job at the Stanfield Asylum as one of the main general practitioners. It’s been nearly eight years since he’s been there, and he’s still dealing with so much. There are times when Klaus wishes he could see his mother again, but he also has grown to hate her. But he hates the patients even more, because all they do is complain; Klaus believes that they don’t know what a hard life is.[/size][/blockquote][/blockquote]
