On a brisk October morning, Angelina Summers gave birth to a baby boy. She and her husband named him Benjamin. They lived quite a simple life in a suburb outside of Scranton, PA. While Michael was in advertising, Angelina was a nurse. She was quite confident in her abilities to tend to her son due to the fact that much of her profession required handling babies. Having a child was something she'd been waiting for since she was young. Just the thought of raising another human being fascinated her. They both had high hopes for their little boy.
As Benjamin developed into a toddler, his mother began to notice little quirks about him. Whenever she took him to the park or to a neighborhood play date he would just look around with his wide eyes not even making an effort to interact with the other children. She hoped it was just a phase of shyness so she tried to ignore it. Over the years he was solidly becoming an introverted child. His kindergarten teacher expressed her concerns when he wouldn't talk on the first day. Angelina and Michael knew they had to do something. They took him to a child psychologist. The woman was a bit elderly, but extremely kind and knowledgeable. Unlike the usual types, her office was in her own home. She also had a few dogs. Ben loved visiting her. She was one of the only people he would talk to passionately. By the time he was six, she helped him to become more open.
In his boyhood he made a few friends in his neighborhood. They were all into the same types of things: comics, video games, and baseball. His parents were thrilled that everything was beginning to fall into place. However, they could not predict the events to follow in their son's life. At eleven years old he had just entered the sixth grade. He was a great student was enrolled in honor classes. Everyday he would walk home from school since it wasn't that long of a walk. But one day he didn't come home. Little known to the residents of the small neighborhood, a predator hid in their midst. A man named Ralph Fern had a thirst for children. He approached Ben in his truck on a deserted street on his usual walk home. Insisting that Ben's parents were in some sort of trouble and he had to take Ben to the hospital he persuaded Ben to get in the car. However, Ben was not stupid. He was weary of getting in and he declined. But the man was too strong for him. Before he knew it, he was in the hands of a monster.
The events that took place over the next few days were a blur to Ben. He supposed he blocked them out. But who would want to remember? In truth, Ralph brutalized and sexually abused the young boy in a wooded camping ground. To this day he cannot recall how exactly it happened, but Ben escaped. It was as if he was filled with a burst of adrenaline and he ran as far as he could until he ran into another camp site filled with a group of families on vacation. They brought him back to town and he was reunited with his family. Eventually they caught Fern and he was sentenced to many years in jail. But the damage was already done. Ben would never be the same.
Everything was different. The world looked different. Food tasted different. And most of all, people treated him different. They treated him like a mentally unstable bomb that might go off at any minute. For a year his parents chose to home school him with a tutor that also specialized in psychology. Ben tried to forget and to heal, but the events were burned in his mind. The next year he returned to school. It was the same as home. People knew what happened. Interactions were fake and people were nice because they felt sorry for him. He had never felt so alone.
His sleep disorder began in high school. He had trouble sleeping following the incident, but at fourteen things got to be unbearable. Every time he closed his eyes to sleep his body filled with a numbing fear of someone coming to get him. The thought of sleep and being vulnerable made him nauseous. The years passed and his parents tried just about everything. However, they had another child to care for. At seventeen they decided to try to get him extreme help. It was then that he was sent away.
